What is a Unicorn Company?
A unicorn refers to a privately-held startup valued at over $1 billion. The term was coined by Aileen Lee, founder of Cowboy Ventures, in 2013.
“We wanted the term to feel special because it’s rare, almost magical, to build a unicorn company,” Lee told TechCrunch.
Some well-known (former) unicorns include Airbnb, Uber, Robinhood, and Instacart.
TikTok Developer is the Most Valuable Unicorn
Chinese TikTok developer ByteDance tops the ranking with a valuation exceeding $225 billion.
The company has faced pressure to sell its U.S. operations to a U.S. firm due to concerns over the Chinese government’s potential access to TikTok’s vast user data. Currently, around 50% of Americans use TikTok, and 14% of U.S. adults regularly get news from the platform.

Following the success of ChatGPT, OpenAI has emerged as the third most valuable unicorn. The company recently announced it has raised $6.6 billion in new funding, achieving a $157 billion post-money valuation.
Overall, six of the 10 most valuable unicorns are based in the United States.
